[24/07/2010] Capturing Action Shots in Low Light Conditions

Most photographers like to try their hand at taking indoor action shots at some point, even though they are fully aware that it is one of the most challenging aspects of photography. However, even though quite difficult, it is definitely not impossible and anyone who is committed can learn how to take great indoor action photographs.
After having acquired a good digital camera with manual control settings and having realized that action shots require lightning-quick reflexes, then it is time to get an in-depth understanding of the subject. This can be done by studying the subject for some time prior to taking the photo, so that it becomes easier to anticipate the action before it occurs. Prior observation enables the photographer to decide on the shots to be captured and can also help him judge the vantage point that would give the best picture. These two factors differ in accordance with the nature of the action and therefore need to be worked out separately for each of the shots.
When taking indoor action shots for a first time, the results are typically blurry photos – this is due to the fact that when left on auto, the camera would try to adjust to the low light and therefore use slow shutter speed.
And grasping the shutter speed basics is an extremely important requisite when taking action shots under varying light conditions, particularly in low light. An important recommendation in this case is to set the digital camera in the shutter priority mode so that the settings can be customized according to the demands of the situation. Another well-known trick of the trade is to minimize the shutter lag by holding the shutter button halfway down and pressing it all the way as soon as the action takes place. A digital camera which has fast shutter speed is ideal for taking action photographs particularly in low light conditions as it will ensure capturing a perfect action shot courtesy of its continuous shooting features.
