[10/11/2010] Is it OK to Use Cheaper Media?

Memory cards are far more affordable today than they used to be only a few short years ago, but investing in a good quality media means not only more storage for your photos and videos, but also faster recording time. Apart from many well-known manufacturers, a great number of independent producers make media cards as well and the market is also flooded with counterfeits that should be avoided at all costs. When shopping for a new media card, keep the following facts into account:

  • The higher-end and pricier, brand name memory card might come with qualities that are well worth paying a few extra pounds for. Speed is one of these qualities, which could make all the difference between having a great photo shoot and missing an opportunity to snap some excellent photos. This is especially true when using a burst mode to take a great number of pictures in quick succession and slower memory card would be practically useless when choosing a drive or burst mode.
  • Find out if the memory card comes with warranty: most brand name memory cards come with warranty, which would entitle you for a free replacement or in the worst case scenario, you will received a new memory card for free, but will have to pay the P&P charges.
  • Higher quality, brand name media could prove more reliable. You would want to have a memory card that works as it is supposed to all the time and for at least a few months and even years. The cheaper and no-name media cards are typically less durable and more likely to develop a fault.
  • When buying brand name media cards, purchase them from the manufacturer’s or well-known stores. This is the only way to ensure that you are getting the “real deal,” as many small corner shops are known to be selling counterfeit and lower quality equipment. Do not be tempted by the lower prices as a counterfeit memory might not only be slower and less reliable, but could damage your camera as well!
  • Brand name media card that are of high quality is also likely to perform better in extreme weather conditions. Although trying to use your camera in extreme temperatures is not advisable (unless it is a weatherproof) but in a hot summer day or in a freezing winter night, the brand name memory card is the one that is likely to work perfectly.

Keep in mind that there is no guarantee whatsoever that purchasing a very expensive memory card will give you a better media storage, but using some common sense and sticking to memory cards with proven record is likely to save you money and time.
