[10/11/2010] Consider an Add-On Lens

When owing a high-end camera with interchangeable lenses, you should invest in one or more extra lenses. If you have only one wide-angle view lens, then you might want to invest in a telephoto lens and vice versa. You could also purchase a cheaper lens that you could take virtually everywhere, when you do not want to risk taking your best lens. The different lenses are ideal for the different shooting situations as well and while a long telephoto with high zoom is perfect for shooting pictures from afar, a wide-angle lens is far more suitable when capturing landscapes or photographing large groups of people.

If you are just starting up, you might want to buy an affordable, “wide-range” lens, but these lenses might take poorer quality photos, especially at the end of their magnification range. You should also make sure that the lens that you intend to purchase would fit your camera – refer to the user’s manual and always take your camera with you when shopping as this would help you “get a feel” of the lens when mounted on the camera as well. Keep in mind that once you change the lens, you are likely to have to use different settings as well in order to take clear and bright photos – using a high-zoom telephoto lens is likely to result in blurrier photos, unless your camera comes with image stabilization or you invest in stabilizing equipment such as tripod or monopod.  After you purchase your add-on lens, spend a few more pounds in order to buy a spare lens cap for each one of your lenses as well. The lens caps are cheap, but easy to lose and having an extra one is always a good idea!
