[10/11/2010] Caring for Your Camera
If you take photography seriously and even if you are an amateur that snaps a great number of photos, you should follow a few simple rules in order to keep your camera and equipment functional:
- Clean your camera bag: occasionally, you should take the time to dust off your camera bag. Even if you keep it closed most of the time, once you take your equipment on a few trips, it is likely that tiny dust particles will accumulate inside your bag and could smudge your camera’s viewfinder and lens.
- Keep your camera bag closed at all times! You should form a habit of always closing your camera bag and all its compartments and pockets. This is the only way to ensure that you will not lose an expensive lens, your batteries, memory cards, or other accessories.
- Check your camera strap before packing your camera. This only takes a second, but making sure that your camera strap is secure should be a part of your preparation routine.
- Take the time to attach the lens hood properly. This is something that you do not want to hurry as failing to attach it properly could cause it or the camera to fall and get damaged, and could result in photos with black edges as well.
- Consider replacing your bulky camera bag with a rolling camera case. They are spacious enough to hold a camera and many accessories, but also small enough to easily carry anywhere.
- If your camera LCD screen is difficult to read in a bright day, consider buying a LCD hood: refer to the camera’s manual to find out which LCD hoods are compatible with your camera.
- Check the airlines baggage regulations when traveling. It is always advisable to take your digital camera with you on the plane rather than checking it in. Take the time to familiarize yourself with the specific airline’s regulations – most airlines allow one personal item to be taken on the plane along with the carry-on luggage, but not all carriers follow this rule.
