[09/11/2010] Using a Lens Shade

Even thought the vast majority of the digital camera users might have never heard of or used a lens shade before, they could actually benefit from purchasing this accessory. The lens shade (or lens hood) is meant to protect the lens of the camera from the sunlight or artificial light, and the most professional cameras with telephoto lenses are almost always equipped with one. However, lens hoods are also used with digital cameras and could be included in the camera’s kit or purchased separately. Using a lens shade comes with a number of benefits:

  1. It could improve the photo quality – the lens hood is likely to keep the direct light away from the lens and thus prevent glair and lens flair.
  2. A lens shade can protect the lens from dust and other elements and lessen the chances of scratches.
  3. They could come in handy when changing lenses in the field.
