[09/11/2010] Buying a Digital Camera - Important Features to Look For
Apart from the camera’s resolution and optical zoom, there are great number of features that the users easily overlook, but they could be vital for the quality of the taken photos. Listed below are some of these features and each one of them is explained briefly:
Pre-programmed scene modes: these often come in handy and are extremely beneficial for the less experienced photographers. A pre-programmed shooting mode is a combination of settings that is likely to deliver the perfect picture. These modes could be automatically chosen by the camera itself after it analyzes the shooting conditions, or the photographer might have to dial them in. Even some of the older digital cameras have them and selecting a “portrait,” “landscape,” “night,” or “sports” mode might be something that most users are already familiar with. However, the more sophisticated compact digital cameras can come up with no less than twenty to thirty scene modes and that makes the photographer’s job extremely easy, as all they have to do is select the appropriate mode, point the camera, and press down the shutter button.
Video and audio connections are almost a standard feature, but it is worth checking if they are available when purchasing a new digital camera. These connections allow the users to link the camera to a large TV screen with the supplied A/V cable and watch the videos that they have recorded, or play back the photos as a slideshow. Seeing your photos on a good LCD camera screen might give you an idea of how they came out, but cannot compare to viewing them on a big TV screen.
Research before you buy – if you enter an electronics shop unprepared, you could be easily convinced by a fast-talking salesperson to buy a camera that might not cover all your needs. When shopping for a new camera, always take the time to read various reviews rather than just read the description, supplied by the manufacturer. Some of the best known camera review sites are:

- Photo.net: http://www.photo.net/

See if the digital camera comes with the accessories that you need. This is especially true when buying a DSLR camera as they are not only pricier than the compact digital cameras, but their accessories are more expensive as well. Apart from finding out if a DSLR camera is sold “body only,” see if it includes flash as well – if the camera does not have an onboard flash, you would have to purchase an external flash unit and it is better to calculate its price in your budget as well.
