[08/11/2010] Consider the Total Cost of Ownership

When budgeting for a digital camera, you should always take into account a few add-ons and extras that you are likely to have to purchase together with the camera. While the accessories might not be overly expensive, their cost can quickly add up and cause you to go easily over budget and spend more than you have initially planned to. Here are some of the add-ons that you are likely to need:

  • Media storage - most digital cameras come with a 16MB or 32MB internal memory, which allows you to store only a few high-resolution photos. Purchasing an external memory cards is something that you cannot avoid unless you have bought a bundle and the digital camera comes with a 1GB or larger storage media.
  • Rechargeable batteries – again, the majority of the camera models come with no batteries at all or with the cheapest batteries, which would run out of power after the first few hundred photos. In order to ensure uninterrupted continuous operation, you should purchase rechargeable and longer-lasting batteries.
  • Lens for the DSLR cameras – if you decide to purchase a DSLR camera, keep in mind that most of them are sold as “body only” and you will have to budget for at least one lens and possible more if you intend to shoot photos under various conditions.
  • Camera bag – if you intend to take your camera on your trips, then dropping it or scratching is something that is likely to happen unless you purchase a camera bag. Luckily, the camera bags are not overly expensive and could be found for a few pounds.
  • Stabilization equipment – if you want to be able to take professional photos, then stabilization equipment such as tripod or monopod is essential. Their models and prices vary, but the higher quality comes with a higher price as well.
  • Media card reader, backup device, UV filters, and other add-ons might be necessary as well, depending on the camera model and your needs.

Make sure to have a full list of all accessories that you are likely to need and once you add their cost to the cost of the digital camera itself, only then you will have an idea on what you need to spend.
