[08/11/2010] What to Look for to Take Night Photography

Even though taking absolutely perfect night photos with a lower end digital cameras might be possible, it is far more likely that the pictures taken with these cameras would be noisy and of low quality. In order to be able to take excellent night photos, you need a digital camera that comes with a number of settings and utilizes certain technologies as well. If you expect to take many photos in low-light, then look for a camera, which:

  1. Has a higher ISO speed settings. The digital cameras use an ISO equivalent and the ones with higher ISO are typically better equipped for night photos. The latest compact digital camera might come with ISO of 800, 1600, and even 3200, but only the ones that are capable of taking clear photos at these settings, are suitable for night photography.
  2. Cameras that offer longer exposure are better for taking night photos. You might need a full second, two, or even more in order to snap good quality night shots. However, longer exposure usually comes hand in hand with blurry photos caused by camera shake, and a tripod, monopod, or any other stabilization equipment can come in handy in such situations.
  3. Seek cameras with a night scene mode. If a camera has a night scene mode, this should allow you to simply point-and-shoot without having to worry about manually choosing the optimal ISO, exposure, and shutter speed.
  4. Cameras with image stabilization features are more suitable for night shots. Almost all latest digital camera models come with optical or digital image stabilization that compensates for camera shake and these features ensure images that are sharper and free of blur.
