The short answer to this question is – it depends! And even though this might not be what you want to hear, the optimal zoom of a compact digital camera indeed depends on your needs. If you want to be able to take stunning landscape, scenery, bird, and wildlife photos, then the more the better and you should consider a camera that offers at least a 7x magnification. If all you need is a quick to use snapper to take photos of your family members and friends, then you could do away with lower magnification ratio and even a camera with 3-4X zoom should work for you.
Last, but not least, if you want to be able to take professional photos, then consider purchasing a DSLR camera as they can be used with different lenses and every time you could use the best lens for the job.
